In 1994, Congress unanimously passed “The Parents’ Day Resolution” establishing the fourth Sunday of July as a perennial day of commemoration. On this day each year, Americans recognize outstanding parents, celebrate the teamwork in raising children, and support the role of parental guidance in building a strong, stable society.

The idea of an edible candy on a stick is very simple, and it is probable that the lollipop has been invented and reinvented numerous times. The first confections that closely resemble lollipops date back to the Middle Ages, when the nobility would often eat boiled sugar with the aid of sticks or handles. The term 'lollipop' was recorded by English lexicographer Francis Grose in 1796. The term may have derived from the term "lolly" (tongue) and "pop" (slap). The first references to the lollipop in its modern context date to the 1920s.

July 11th is National Blueberry Muffin Day. Here is some history behind this iconic breakfast food. While the exact origin of the blueberry muffin is unknown, there is a prevailing theory. Europeans used bilberries in various baked goods, including muffins and cakes. When the colonists arrived in North America they learned that there were no bilberries. However, there were plenty of wild blueberries, which Native Americans used in their own cooking. Some people theorize that the Europeans began using wild blueberries in place of bilberries in their recipes, including in muffins, thus giving birth to the blueberry muffin. Today, blueberry muffins are an extremely popular food and options run from healthy to decadent. In fact, blueberry muffins are so well-loved that they have an entire day dedicated to them! Looking for a summer activitity to do with children today? Why not bake togther and follow this delicious blueberry muffin recipe!

The American English expression "fried chicken" was first recorded in the 1830s, and frequently appears in American cookbooks of the 1860s and 1870s. The origin of fried chicken in the southern states of America has been traced to precedents in Scottish and West African cuisine. It's now an American favorite!

The heat index will be at 104 for the rest of this week. Per MHSAA guidelines we are canceling all practices and athletic activities for this week. Indoor practices are only allowed if we had air conditioning, which we do not have. Enjoy your families and stay safe. We should be able to return to our normal schedule next week.
